The Difference Between Woven & Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric

Should You Use Woven or Non-Woven Geotextile as Underlayment?

Woven or Non-Woven Geotextile Underlay

If just the word "geotextile" has you saying.. what? Let me explain a little bit about the difference of woven and non woven.

Woven Geotextile:

The woven geotextile fabric is manufactured with a process of weaving narrow strips of film together to form one large peice.

The benefit of woven underlayment is that it has a higher load capacity. This would be good for roadways, etc. The downfall of woven is it does not have as good of drainage characteristics as non-woven underlayment would.

Non- Woven Geotextile:

On the opposite end of woven is non-woven. These geotextiles are manufactured by bonding with needle punching, chemically, or heat, or by entangling fibres of plastic.

Its excellent filtration and drainage makes it ideal for pond underlayment, erosion control, speration fabric, and drainage fabric. So for example.. if you were building a permeable paver patio you would want to use non woven fabric so that the water did not pool on the patio and drained into the soil.

So I hope that clears up some confusion on why we use non-woven geotextile instead of woven on applications. Let me know if you have any questions.
